14 Van Houten Street

Built in 1825 for John Gardineer, the original west wing of 14 Van Houten Street was one of the earliest of about 24 similar little houses in the Van Houten's Landing Neighborhood and remains a clear example of how they once looked. Some were raised, with a habitable basement; others were built close to the ground. They were heated by wood and coal fires, lighted by oil lamps and candles and relied on shared wells for water. Most still remain and can be spotted under a wide variety of additions.
