Built about 1799, it was the home of John Van Houten who operated a landing, boatyard, general store, post office and
hotel at the foot of Van Houten Street and Castle Heights Avenue for about 50 years. He also sold lots and began developing the neighborhood. The businesses were
carried on by his son, John Van Houten Jr., and granddaughter Eleanor "Ellen" Van Houten Tallman. The Mansard Style roof
was added to the house in the Victorian Period.
